Mid-Modern Mug in Ochre

This mug is one that cup to your chest while you stare out the window on a Sunday morning and let your thoughts pleasantly wander. It is a stoneware mug that was thrown by hand on the potter’s wheel, then trimmed after the clay firmed a bit. The single-finger handle is placed low so that the mug balances well when full of your favorite fresh coffee.

The glaze is one of my own recipes, one I call Ochre (oh-ker). It provides an interesting range of surface and color for a single glaze. Where thin, Ochre gives an earthy yellow-orange and a satin surface finish while thicker areas yield a flowing range of glossy teals, creams, and purples.

The compact shape of the mug helps hold heat even while allowing for a generous 12 ounces.
